Picture this a bustling Berlin street. Illstrasse 4-6 stands before you. This is the Flämingschule. This isn’t just any school. It’s a place steeped in history. A place of pioneering spirit.

The Flämingschule opened its doors in 1875. It began life as the I. Gemeindeschule Berlin-Friedenau. It was located on Albestrasse. In 1932 it became the 18. Volksschule Berlin-Schöneberg. Then on October 26 1956 it adopted its current name. The Flämingschule takes its name from the Fläming region. This is a beautiful Brandenburg nature reserve.

But the true story of the Flämingschule unfolds later. In 1975 something extraordinary happened. Parents fought tirelessly for their children. They demanded their children attend the same school. This included children with disabilities and those without. Their vision was radical. The Flämingschule became the first integration school in the German-speaking world. This was a landmark achievement. It challenged traditional educational models.

The school’s commitment to inclusion has had national impact. A documentary film ‘Klassenleben’ highlighted this in 2005. The Flämingschule welcomed approximately 590 students. Roughly ten percent required special educational support. Fifty teachers guided them. The school’s approach is notable. It asks not what a child must be able to do. Instead it asks what the school must do to welcome a child.

The Flämingschule moved to its current location in Illstrasse in 1973. The school building boasts a four-classroom capacity. It is a testament to the school’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity. A beacon in a city that continually evolves.

The legacy of the Flämingschule lives on. It inspires schools across Germany and beyond. It is a story of parents’ advocacy and a school’s courage. It showcases the transformative power of inclusion. The Flämingschule stands as a powerful symbol. This symbol is one of unity and the celebration of diversity. The school stands proudly on Illstrasse. It remains a testament to the enduring power of inclusive education.
