Above this idol, there is a small Ganesh idol. This was the original idol worshipped at the first location.
Later an auditorium and Goshala were built. The temple hosts music programs during Vinayakar Chathurthi in the auditorium. The Varasiddhi Vinayakar Temple actively feeds the poor and holds poojas often.
Now about the growing idol in the Vinayakar Temple. It is said that the idol is growing in size over time. Only the knees and abdomen are visible now. A silver kavacham was offered to the idol. It was given by a devotee about fifty years ago. Today, that armour doesn’t fit the idol. This suggests the idol has indeed grown.
Another Ganesha story tells of Sundarar. He was one of the great Saivaite saints. Sundarar tested the gold coins he received from Shiva. He made Ganesh a witness to his actions. That Ganesh is called Maatru Uraiththa Pillayar. It means Ganesh who tested the fineness of the gold coins.
