For over 60 years Grace New Life Center Church of God of Prophecy has been a beacon in this community. It shares the gospel of Jesus Christ transforming lives from sin to hope. The Church of God of New Rochelle has a rich history. It began in 1949 in Brother Witt Brown’s home on Lafayette Avenue. Sister Hannah Brown became the first pastor.
Pastor Brown served faithfully until she passed away in 1955. Brother David Smith then took over but fell ill after only six months. In 1956 Sister Elizabeth Herring became pastor. She was determined to build God’s kingdom.
Under Pastor Herring’s leadership the Church of God of New Rochelle grew. It moved to a larger space on Huguenot Avenue. More people joined the church. However the city purchased the property. The church had to find a new location. They moved to Mechanic Street but faced community opposition.
The Church of God of New Rochelle persevered. Pastor Herring and Deacon Witt Brown secured a location at 218 Union Avenue. The Lord blessed the church. They experienced much growth.
In August 1965 Bishop Willie R. Boone became pastor. The church continued to grow spiritually and numerically. Bishop Boone served until July 1971. In August 1971 Bishop John C. Newkirt was appointed.
Bishop Newkirt inspired the members to trust God for a bigger church. Through hard work the Church of God of New Rochelle secured a mortgage. They purchased the property at 128 Winthrop Avenue in 1972. This is where the church currently worships.
Since 1972 the Church of God of New Rochelle has seen many changes. There have been pastoral transitions and spiritual growth. After Bishop Newkirt several pastors led. These included Bishop Herbert A. Ferguson and Evangelist Willa B. Smith. Also Evangelist Bruce Scotton Bishop Calvin C. Jones Bishop George L. Jones and Bishop Eric J. Leamy.
On August 1 2011 Bishop Orville R. Beckford Sr. became pastor with his wife Minister Deana. Since their arrival the church has experienced a mighty move of God. Lives are transformed as the truth of God’s word is preached. People understand their purpose in life.
Under Bishop Beckford’s leadership the church adopted the name Grace New Life Center. The ministry focuses on God’s grace and love. They hope everyone who enters will experience God’s grace. All will feel God’s love. Grace is available for all needs.
