Established in 1921 Congregation Young Israel of Brooklyn held its first Shabbat services just a year later. This wasn’t just any congregation. It played a vital role in supporting those persecuted during the Holocaust. It provided crucial financial aid to the nascent State of Israel. It even helped those behind the Iron Curtain.

Congregation Young Israel of Brooklyn wasn’t merely a place of worship. It was a community hub. It spearheaded the creation of a local Mikveh a ritual bath. It established a Gemilut Chassadim organization for charitable acts. It even played a key role in creating the Greater Flatbush Eruv a designated area where observant Jews can carry items on Shabbat.

Its building designed by Louis Allen Abramson is a stunning example of Moorish Revival architecture. Polychromatic patterned brick horseshoe arches and minarets adorn its exterior. Intricate polychromatic tiles add to its splendor. The main entrance framed by a horseshoe arch is truly magnificent.

The interior continues the Moorish theme. Polychromatic tiling frames walls and surrounds window openings. Judaic symbols such as the Magen David the Star of David are subtly incorporated throughout. The ark itself is a more classical design. Above it is a representation of the Tablets of the Law.

The dedication of the building in 1929 was a momentous occasion. The congregation’s records recount a memorable detail. The first High Holiday services were held in the unfinished basement. A raging storm provided a free shower for those attending services.

Congregation Young Israel of Brooklyn played a vital role in helping Jewish immigrants after World War II. They sent hundreds of affidavits to the US State Department attesting to job offers. At one point the State Department was overwhelmed. They said seventeen assistant rabbis for one synagogue was excessive. The sheer number of affidavits sent shows the congregation’s deep commitment to helping its people.

Today this historic synagogue remains a symbol of faith community and resilience. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Congregation Young Israel of Brooklyn and its lasting impact on the community.
