Can a building whisper secrets of unity and remembrance? Here at the Brisbane Co-Masonic Temple, it certainly feels that way. This imposing structure, completed in 1930, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Freemasonry in Queensland. The Brisbane Co-Masonic Temple isn’t just a building. It’s a monument, a memorial, and a symbol of unity. The story begins in 1921 with the formation of the United Grand Lodge of Queensland, uniting 281 lodges. To mark this historic union, the Grand Lodge envisioned a grand temple. After a design competition, the plans of Freemason Lange Powell were chosen. The Brisbane Co-Masonic Temple began to rise on Ann Street, its foundation stone laid on Anzac Day, 1928. A time capsule rests beneath that stone, holding newspapers, cheques, a speech, and coins – a snapshot of that moment in time. The construction took two years and a hefty sum of £103,000, plus another £10,000 for furnishings. Freemasons across Queensland contributed, ensuring the Brisbane Co-Masonic Temple became a shared achievement. The design is a marvel of the Classical Revival style. Six giant Corinthian columns, each five feet in diameter at the base, dominate the facade. They support a detailed entablature and pediment crafted from Yangan sandstone. Notice the granite base and the bronze flagstaffs flanking the entrance. Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by the Hall of Remembrance. Here, the Urn of Remembrance stands as a poignant tribute to brethren lost in World War I. The Brisbane Co-Masonic Temple also housed offices, a library, and a museum. Lodge rooms filled the first floor, supper rooms the second. But the crown jewel is the Grand Lodge room on the top floor. Imagine a space seating 1100 people, described as the “largest and finest of its kind in Australia.” This grand hall, with its vaulted ceiling and rich décor, has witnessed countless Masonic ceremonies. The Brisbane Co-Masonic Temple is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the values of Freemasonry. It’s a place of remembrance, unity, and enduring legacy.
