Tabacalera’s history is rich. Built between 1780 and 1792 it initially served as a Royal Distillery and Card Factory. It later transformed into a Tobacco and Rapé Factory. For nearly two centuries tobacco filled the air. The scent of cigars hung heavy. Workers bustled. It operated until the late 20th century. Then silence fell.
The building lay empty for almost a decade after closing in 2000. But the silence didn’t last. The Ministry of Culture took over in 2003. A grand vision took shape. In 2007 the plan for Tabacalera Promoción del Arte was approved. It would become a National Center for Visual Arts.
Today Tabacalera showcases contemporary art. Photography contemporary art and visual arts take center stage. Temporary exhibitions fill its spaces. The main exhibition hall La Principal is impressive. Its 1200 square meters host large-scale exhibitions. La Fragua another space focuses on emerging artists. It opened in 2013 with a photography exhibition. Even the exterior walls are a canvas. The Muros Tabacalera project transformed them into an open-air urban art gallery. Thirty-two artists created twenty-seven pieces of urban art.
