Gazing at the Stöckener Bach, can you imagine it flowing backward? It’s a peculiar sight when the Leine River floods. The high water forces its way into the Stöckener Bach. The water then appears to flow upstream, against its natural course. This unusual phenomenon is a testament to the Stöckener Bach’s unique character. The Stöckener Bach starts its journey from the Gretelriede area. It winds its way through the Stöcken woods for 2.7 kilometers. Finally, it tumbles into the Leine River over a small cascade. For a significant portion of its journey, the Stöckener Bach isn’t a natural stream. It emerges from a pipe near the intersection of Gretelriede and Eilersweg. The “Riede” in Gretelriede hints at its origins. It used to be a natural depression where water collected. From there, it would flow away in natural channels. But urbanization changed this landscape dramatically. The area was extensively drained. This made way for industrial settlements and residential development. Along Gretelriede and through Spannriede, the Stöckener Bach is confined to ditches and a moat. Steep embankments and engineered structures shape its course. Only after the Gemeindeholz area does the Stöckener Bach regain its natural charm. Restoration efforts brought it back to life. Sections that were once piped were removed. Stone sills, floodplains, and improved cross-sections were implemented. Now, from Gemeindeholz to its mouth, it meanders through a stretch of greenery. Trees and shrubs line its banks, creating a haven for local flora and fauna. Near Laukerthof, the Stöckener Bach carved a small valley. It’s four meters deep and has become a hotspot for biodiversity. Before joining the Leine, the Stöckener Bach flows under the B6 highway through a tunnel. Pedestrians and cyclists cross the stream on a grate bridge above the tunnel. This allows them to safely bypass the busy road below. Just past a wooden bridge, shadowed by tall poplars, the Stöckener Bach completes its journey. It flows over a short cascade into the Leine River. The Stöckener Bach’s water levels fluctuate drastically. It receives water from rainwater canals. These canals drain the Stöcken, Ledeburg, and Leinhausen districts, including the Volkswagen AG industrial area. During dry spells, the Stöckener Bach can dry up completely. Yet, heavy rains quickly replenish it, only for the water to drain away just as fast. The Stöckener Bach is a unique waterway that showcases the interplay of nature and urban development.
