Before us stands a testament to human ingenuity. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge is the standout feature. It boasts the world’s largest span for a fully offshore steel box girder suspension bridge. Its main towers rise 270 meters tall. That’s the equivalent of a 90-story building. This bridge isn’t just long. It’s incredibly high too. Its navigation clearance is 76.5 meters. This ensures even the largest ships can pass safely beneath. The bridge holds five world records a feat of engineering brilliance.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge wasn’t built easily. The team faced brutal conditions. High temperatures humidity salt exposure and frequent typhoons tested their limits. They had to overcome manufacturing and prefabrication challenges for the immersed tube tunnel. The installation of large tube segments under deep water with millimeter level accuracy was a huge challenge. Despite these obstacles the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link was completed. It opened on June 30 2024.
The bridge isn’t just impressive above the water. Below the waves lies an equally impressive feat. This is the world’s longest and widest underwater immersed tube tunnel. It’s also the world’s first dual-direction eight-lane steel shell concrete immersed tube tunnel. This tunnel section is about 5 kilometers long containing 32 tube segments. The final joint is particularly noteworthy. It features the widest repeatedly foldable M-shaped water stop. This ensures that even during flooding the tunnel remains watertight.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is more than just a bridge and tunnel. It contains the world’s first underwater expressway interchange. An artificial island shaped like a diamond acts as a transition point between the sea bridge and underwater tunnel. It’s a crucial segment of a 100-kilometer transportation network.
