Initially located at 1717 Troutman Street Underdonk thrived in Bushwick’s industrial setting. Affordable rents attracted them. However that changed. Landlords evicted all galleries in 2015. Underdonk relocated temporarily. They then found their current home at 1329 Willoughby Avenue. Underdonk’s name? It’s a catchy twist on Onderdonk Street. That’s near their original location. It means “under the hill” in Dutch. Underdonk showcases emerging artists. They feature diverse disciplines. Readings performances and guest curators are common. Over 100 exhibitions prove their impact. Reviews in The New Yorker and other publications celebrate Underdonk. The gallery’s eleven members curate shows.
