Vineyards once flourished here. Ampelokipoi, meaning vineyards in Greek, is now a large central district of Athens.

Let’s explore Ampelokipoi. This area has a rich history and many stories.

Ampelokipoi is near Zografou, Goudi, Psychiko and Pagkrati. It is a bustling area in the heart of Athens. Ampelokipoi is known as one of the most densely populated districts in the city.

Before Greek independence in the 19th century, Ampelokipoi was a village. It was a few kilometers northeast of Athens. Maps from that time show the village outside Athens’ boundaries. Later, wealthy Athenians built cottages here because of the healthy climate. Many hospitals were constructed in Ampelokipoi between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, you can find Erythros Stavros Hospital and other hospitals here.

After the Asia Minor Disaster in 1922, Ampelokipoi saw a population explosion. Many refugees settled here. The government initially planned to house them at the Panathinaikos stadium. This led to conflict with fans. The government then created Kountouriotika, a new district around the stadium. Later, they built more refugee housing opposite the stadium. These houses, built between 1933 and 1935, are now historical monuments.

Ampelokipoi is home to Panathinaikos’ ground, inaugurated in 1922. Ampelokipoi B.C., a basketball club founded in 1929 also calls this place home.

Two metro stations serve Ampelokipoi: Ambelokipi station and Panormou station. These stations connect the district to the rest of Athens.

Important buildings are here. You can find the Hellenic Police Headquarters and the Court of Cassation. The Athens Prefecture Building is also located in Ampelokipoi. The Athens Tower is the tallest building in Greece. The Apollo Tower is the tallest residential building.

Ampelokipoi has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Winters are mild and summers are hot. July and August are the driest months. The rainiest period is in the fall.

Many residential streets are named after geographical locations.

Ampelokipoi is a blend of history and modernity. It is a place where vineyards once grew and refugees found a home. Today, it is a vibrant district in the heart of Athens. Its story is woven into the fabric of the city. As you leave Ampelokipoi, remember its history and the lives it has sheltered.
