Originally a cinema, the Cameo stands as a testament to Brussels’ rich architectural and entertainment history. The Cameo first opened its doors in 1926. It premiered with the silent film epic “Ben-Hur,” starring Ramon Novarro. Designed by the renowned architect Gaston Ide, the Cameo building showcases the distinctive Art Deco style. Its facade, clad in simili-stone and painted white, features geometric shapes, decorative motifs, and a touch of gilded elegance. Imagine the excitement of filmgoers in the 1920s, entering the Cameo’s grand auditorium, complete with a balcony and seating for approximately 775 people. The Cameo wasn’t just a cinema. In 1932, a modernist cabaret-dancing venue, known as the “Bar du Caméo,” later “le Broadway,” was added to the basement. This addition brought a new dimension of nightlife and entertainment to the bustling area. The Cameo even played a role in Hollywood history. For many years, it was owned by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and showcased all the studio’s major classic films. Later, in 1980, the Cameo underwent internal renovations, dividing the large auditorium into two smaller screens. Sadly, the Cameo’s run as a cinema ended in 1991. The building has since been repurposed as a casino, yet it retains its original name. While the silver screen may no longer flicker within its walls, the Cameo’s legacy lives on. The building reminds us of Brussels’ glamorous past.
