A sanctuary rebuilt. That’s the story of Carters Temple Church. Right here on Lavender Street in Houston. This isn’t just any church. Carters Temple Church has a history etched in faith perseverance and rebuilding. For fifteen years it thrived in a smaller building. Marriages happened. Children were born. People found healing and faith. Then Pastor Carter had a vision. He saw a larger church a wayfaring church he called it. Many would come and be blessed. Not all would stay. This led to training people for ministry. They now serve in various cities and states.
In 1986 a new foundation was poured. The congregation participated in a unique dedication. They walked silently around the foundation. A powerful symbolic act. The first service in the new building was held in July of that year. The spirit soared. The church continued to grow. Pastor Jesse L Carter Sr rose to become a District Superintendent. His wife Freddye Carter served as Supervisor of Women.
Tragedy struck in 2003. The sanctuary roof collapsed. Services continued in the fellowship hall. It remained intact. Preachers and missionaries continued to gather. Then in 2006 Pastor Carter passed away. A great loss for the church. His son Jesse L Carter II became the new pastor. His mother Joyce Carter became First Lady. The congregation grieved. They also rallied. They embarked on another building project. A modern sanctuary was built. Dedicated in May 2009. It stands as a testament to their faith. A symbol of resilience.
Carters Temple Church continues its legacy. It remains a haven. A place of spiritual security. A wayfaring church indeed. A place where people find shelter and guidance. A place where God’s presence remains strong. A story of faith overcoming adversity. A story that continues to unfold.
