Today, the Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH) stands on the historical soil of Hamburg, ready to transform how the port city thinks about power. Harznutzung, located at the site of the former Moorburg coal-fired power plant, represents a bold step towards a decarbonized future. This isn’t just another industrial site. Harznutzung is where the past meets the future. Where once coal powered Hamburg, now wind and solar energy will be used to create green hydrogen. The HGHH project, a partnership between Luxcara and Hamburger Energiewerke, will see a 100 MW electrolysis plant rise from the ground. Think of it: massive electrolyzers, the technology supplied by Siemens Energy, splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen. No fossil fuels, just the power of nature, harnessed and transformed. Starting in 2027, Harznutzung will produce approximately 10,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. This hydrogen will fuel industry, transport, and even replace natural gas. Harznutzung’s hydrogen is versatile, powering clean electric motors or blending with natural gas for the existing grid. It can even be processed into synthetic natural gas, a potential game-changer for everything from heating homes to generating electricity.
