Ever wonder how a brewery could win awards at both the Chicago and Paris world fairs? Right here at Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma, that’s exactly what happened. Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma, founded in Monterrey in 1890, has a rich history. It’s a story of ambition, innovation, and a few surprising twists. The brewery was the brainchild of José A. Muguerza, Francisco G. Sada Muguerza, Alberto Sada Muguerza, Isaac Garza Garza, and Joseph M. Schnaider. Their initial investment? 150,000 pesos. Their first beer, Carta Blanca, debuted in 1893. It quickly gained international acclaim, winning prizes in Chicago and Paris. Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma wasn’t just about brewing beer. The founders expanded vertically, creating supporting industries. They established Vidrios y Cristales de Monterrey in 1909 to produce glass bottles. They also founded Fábricas de Cartón Monterrey for packaging materials. Even a malt production company, Malta, S.A., joined the family in 1929. The Mexican Revolution threw a wrench in the works. The founders’ support of Victoriano Huerta led to the brewery’s seizure by his rival, Venustiano Carranza. The families fled to Texas. Only through diplomatic intervention did they regain control of Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma. The company continued to grow, merging with Cervecería Moctezuma in 1985. This added iconic brands like Dos Equis, Sol, and Noche Buena to their portfolio. Today, Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma is part of Heineken International, a testament to its enduring legacy. It’s a brewery that has weathered storms, embraced innovation, and left its mark on the world, one refreshing cerveza at a time.
