Gazing at Friedrichswerdersche Kirche, imagine a church so groundbreaking, it was Berlin’s first foray into Neo-Gothic architecture. This architectural gem, the Friedrichswerdersche Kirche, stands as a testament to the genius of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, an architect renowned for his Neoclassical works. Built between 1824 and 1831, the Friedrichswerdersche Kirche showcases Schinkel’s remarkable versatility. He masterfully blended Gothic elements, inspired by English chapels, with his classical sensibilities. The church’s interior, with its soaring pillars and intricate reticulated vaults, reflects Gothic principles, creating a sense of awe and reverence. Originally designed in the Neoclassical style, the church’s final Gothic form came at the behest of Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm IV, who preferred the “Old German” aesthetic. Schinkel, ever resourceful, used humble red brick, a material echoing the neighboring churches of St. Nikolai and St. Marien. This choice, unusual for prestigious projects of the time, marked the first use of brick for such a prominent building since the Middle Ages. Friedrichswerdersche Kirche also played a significant role in Berlin’s religious landscape, serving both German and French congregations. Remnants of this past, the pulpit, altar, and some original stained-glass windows, can still be admired today. Sadly, World War II left the church severely damaged. It remained a ruin for decades, its beautiful stained-glass windows crated and forgotten until their rediscovery in 1982 during drainage work at the Berliner Dom. Restored and reopened in 1987 for Berlin’s 750th anniversary, Friedrichswerdersche Kirche became an exhibition space affiliated with the Alte Nationalgalerie. Today, after extensive restoration work completed in 2019, Friedrichswerdersche Kirche once again houses a collection of 19th-century German sculptures. The works of renowned artists like Johann Gottfried Schadow, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, and Christian Daniel Rauch are on display, offering a glimpse into the artistic spirit of the era. Upstairs, an exhibit dedicated to the life and work of Schinkel himself completes the experience, making Friedrichswerdersche Kirche a true cultural treasure. This is more than just a building; it is a story told in brick and stained glass, a testament to resilience and artistic vision.
