Tucked away in the heart of Milan, lies a hidden gem, a replica of the famed Grotta di Lourdes. It’s not just a grotto, but a story, a testament of faith and gratitude. One brother suffered from a terrible illness. Miraculously, he recovered. In their gratitude, the brothers embarked on a mission to create a replica of the Lourdes grotto in their own city. In 1894, they began building the Grotta di Lourdes. At that time, the area was open countryside. They tirelessly raised funds, even selling bricks for 10 centesimi each. Even the parents of the future Pope Paul VI contributed to this sacred project. The grotto depicts the apparition of the Madonna to Saint Bernadette, recreated with meticulous detail. Attached to the Grotta di Lourdes is a Byzantine-style church. The church, designed by architect Campanini, was erected in 1902 at the request of the parishioners. The grotto itself isn’t the only connection this place has to miracles. In 2024, a statue of the Madonna, the very one venerated in the original grotto in Massabielle, made a pilgrimage to this Milanese replica. This allowed those unable to travel to Lourdes to experience a moment of prayer and reflection. The Archbishop of Milan, Mario Delpini, even led a candlelight procession, a moving tribute to the power of faith. The Grotta di Lourdes is more than just a replica.
