Gazing at Nossa Senhora de Campanhã, a captivating tale unfolds. This unassuming shrine holds a story of miracles and resilience. Nossa Senhora de Campanhã, a revered figure in Porto, is deeply intertwined with the city’s history and faith. Legend says in 1722, during a severe drought, the people of Campanhã held a procession honoring Nossa Senhora. As the procession moved through the parched streets, the statue of Nossa Senhora fell from its platform, breaking a hand. Miraculously, a spring of water gushed forth from the spot where the hand landed the following day. This spring, known as the Fonte da Senhora, quenched the thirst of the people and saved the crops. You can still find remnants of this miraculous spring on Rua de Bonjói. A nearby cross and chapel, inaugurated in July 1967, serve as a reminder of this divine intervention. The story of Nossa Senhora de Campanhã doesn’t end there. Another tale connects the name “Campanhã” to a medieval legend. It speaks of Christian warriors battling Moorish invaders. They organized their troops near the Padrão de Campanhã, starting their campaign against the Moors. Upon their victorious return, they discovered a statue of Our Lady in the woods where the Church of Santa Maria de Campanhã now stands. This discovery was seen as a divine confirmation of their military success. The church itself has weathered many storms. It was attacked and nearly destroyed three times, including during the Napoleonic invasions and the Siege of Porto. The current church we see today is a testament to the community’s unwavering faith, rebuilt in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Nossa Senhora de Campanhã remains a potent symbol of hope, resilience, and the enduring power of faith. It’s a place where history and legend intertwine, leaving a lasting impression on those who visit.
