In the southeastern embrace of Madrid lies Rivas-Vaciamadrid, a city brimming with a fascinating, layered history. Rivas-Vaciamadrid pulsates with a modern energy. Yet its roots stretch deep into the past, whispering tales of ancient settlements and royal intrigues. Rivas-Vaciamadrid’s story begins over two millennia ago, marked by Carpetani settlements near the present-day Miralrío. The city’s name is a fusion of two distinct influences. Captain Guillermo Rivas established a Christian enclave here in the 11th century under King Alfonso VI. “Vaciamadrid” likely stems from the Arabic “Manzil Mayrit” or “Fahs Mayrit”, translating to “Mayrit’s Inn” or “Mayrit’s Countryside”, a resting spot for travelers heading to Madrid. In 1845, Rivas and Vaciamadrid merged, creating Rivas del Jarama. This union combined two villages scattered around vast estates. Tragedy struck during the Spanish Civil War. Caught in the crossfire of the Battle of Jarama, Rivas-Vaciamadrid was devastated. The Dirección General de Regiones Devastadas spearheaded its reconstruction in 1954. Growth was slow, with only around 500 inhabitants by the late 1970s. Rivas-Vaciamadrid’s fortunes changed in the 1980s with the arrival of cooperative housing projects. This marked the beginning of a population boom. By 2020, it boasted almost 92,000 residents. This rapid growth represents one of the most significant demographic expansions in a European city in recent decades. Rivas-Vaciamadrid is not just a city of concrete and steel. Seventy percent of its land lies within the Parque Regional del Sureste, a protected area where the Jarama and Manzanares rivers meet. This proximity to nature allows residents and visitors alike to enjoy the rich biodiversity of fertile plains, riverbanks, and wetlands. A modern city with ancient roots, Rivas-Vaciamadrid boasts excellent transport links with Madrid, including three metro stops, eight bus lines, and an extensive network of cycle paths. Its cultural scene is vibrant, featuring venues like the Pilar Bardem Auditorium and the open-air Miguel Ríos Auditorium, both hosting world-class performances. Rivas-Vaciamadrid embodies the dynamic spirit of modern Spain while preserving its rich heritage. It’s a city where the past and the future intertwine, creating a captivating narrative for all who visit.
