Dr Carl C Baccus then a young associate minister at the Figueroa Church of Christ played a pivotal role. At the age of 19 he answered the call to serve this new group of believers in Watts. Six families from his congregation joined him. This small band of dedicated Christians laid the foundation for what would become the thriving Southside Church of Christ. They weren’t just ordinary people. They were administrators office workers and financial analysts but most importantly teachers of the Word.
The early years saw the church meeting in various locations across Los Angeles. Each move was a step toward something bigger and better. Finally the Southside Church of Christ purchased land and built a state-of-the-art facility at 1655 West Manchester Avenue. On August 24 1980 the first worship service was held in this very building. The congregation sang praises to God celebrating His blessings. Dr Baccus’s sermon was powerful. The gospel resonated deeply. Souls were added to the church.
