Did you know a temple could be a refuge in the bustling heart of Gangnam? Bongeunsa Temple is just that. It offers a tranquil escape from the modern cityscape. Bongeunsa Temple was founded in 794. It stands as a testament to resilience amidst a tumultuous history. It was originally named Gyeonseongsa. Bongeunsa rests on the slopes of Sudo Mountain. This location provides a serene backdrop against the towering skyscrapers.

Bongeunsa Temple’s history is intertwined with the Joseon Dynasty. During this era, Buddhism faced suppression. But Queen Jeonghyeon’s patronage led to the temple’s reconstruction in 1498. It was renamed Bongeunsa, meaning “honoring the king”. This reflected prayers for King Seongjong’s eternal life. Queen Munjeong further solidified Bongeunsa’s importance. She revived Buddhism in Korea during the mid-16th century. Bongeunsa became the main temple for the Korean Seon sect from 1551 to 1936.

Tragedy struck Bongeunsa repeatedly. A fire in 1939 and the Korean War brought destruction. However, the Panjeon Hall miraculously survived. It safeguards the 1855 woodblock carvings of the Flower Garland Sutra. These carvings are a treasured artifact. Today, Bongeunsa is a thriving complex again thanks to continuous reconstruction.

Bongeunsa Temple offers a unique cultural immersion through its Temple Stay program. Visitors can experience the life of a monk. This includes baru gongyang, a traditional Buddhist temple meal. They also learn about various temple traditions. This creates a deeper appreciation for Korean Buddhist culture.
