Nine lookout holes. That is how the Nine-Eye Tower got its name. Here before us stands a testament to ancient military strategy. This is no ordinary tower. The Nine-Eye Tower is located in Beijing’s Yanqing District. More precisely it is in Si Hai Town.

The tower sits atop the Flame Mountain. The Flame Mountain’s main peak reaches 1141 meters above sea level. From this height the Nine-Eye Tower surveys the landscape. It stands as the largest and highest-standard enemy tower. It marks a crucial point of ancient military defense.

This strategic position connects three important military towns. These are Xuanfu, now Xuanhua. Next is Weizhou. This is modern-day Beijing. Finally there is Changping. This is the junction of the inner and outer Great Wall. The Nine-Eye Tower’s location is unmatched by any other enemy tower.

Built during the Ming Dynasty, the Nine-Eye Tower boasts a unique design. It is a square, two-story structure. Each side features nine embrasures or lookout holes. Only one story remains standing today. It reaches a height of 7.8 meters. Each side measures 13 meters in length. The embrasures are 1.65 meters high. They are also 0.5 meters wide.

Inside, soldiers once patrolled a 1.2-meter-wide walkway. The tower’s base is constructed of strip stones. The upper part uses white lime and blue bricks. This makes the structure strong and beautiful. West of the tower is a small platform. This served as a gathering place for soldiers. North of the platform, brick steps lead to the tower’s south gate.

The tower’s top features a brick-vaulted structure. The interior is spacious. It could house soldiers and store weapons. Two windows face north. Each side has a door. The doors are two meters high and 1.2 meters wide. They allow easy access.

Over 24 inscriptions adorn the Nine-Eye Tower. Most of them praise its imposing presence. They express the authors’ grand aspirations. It is rare for an enemy tower to inspire so many poems. Ancient military strategists and poets admired this tower. This highlights its unique status.

The Nine-Eye Tower connects the inner and outer Great Wall. Its large scale and numerous inscriptions set it apart. Climbing the tower offers stunning views. To the northwest are towering mountains. Clouds and mist linger around them. To the southeast the Great Wall snakes along the landscape. It presents a magnificent sight.

Human history blends with nature here. The Nine-Eye Tower stands as a unique landmark. It offers new perspectives of the Guliang Valley. The surrounding mountains rise and fall. Ravines crisscross the landscape. Lush greenery stretches out like waves. In the distance clouds create a misty scene. To the southeast Yanxi Lake appears like a sapphire embraced by mountains. To the southwest lies Beijing. It fulfills the ancient saying. “The capital is in front and the palace is in sight.”

As you stand before the Nine-Eye Tower consider its history. Imagine the soldiers who once stood guard here. Feel the weight of the past and the beauty of the present. The Nine-Eye Tower is not just a structure. It is a story etched in brick and stone. It connects us to a rich and complex past.
