High above Manchester, the steeple of Trinity United Church stands tall. Its presence has marked this town for centuries. Trinity United Church existed before Manchester even became a town. Its steeple is so iconic that it appears on the town logo.

Let’s delve into the origins of this prominent church. In 1760, two congregations formed the Zion Union Church. These were the German Reformed and Lutheran groups. They alternated Sundays worshipping in the “Kirche Hausse”. As more immigrants arrived, the church grew. The two congregations amicably separated in 1862. The Reformed Congregation then became Trinity Reformed Church. Today, we know it as Trinity United Church of Christ.

Construction on the present Trinity United Church building began during the Civil War. It was completed in June 1864. The church sits on the corner of York and Church Streets. Its steeple marks the highest point in Manchester. Inside the steeple hangs a 700-pound bell. It was purchased for 55 cents a pound. Every Sunday, it still rings summoning people to worship.

Trinity United Church has always played a vital role in the community. Over the years, it has supported many ministries and local organizations. These benefited the immediate community. One of them is NESAP. It stands for Northeast Social Action Program. The church also supports Manchester’s National Night Out. They provide food bags for backpacks. This program gives monthly food to Manchester Elementary School students. These students could use a little extra help. The congregation even partnered with the town. Together, they installed the first Little Free Library in Manchester.

Now, let’s talk about the Trinity United Church of Christ Cemetery. It appears to be one large cemetery. But, it is actually several cemeteries lying adjacent to one another. It is difficult to tell where each cemetery begins and ends. The old Reformed cemetery extends north of the old oak tree. It stretches to the sidewalks of York Street. Slight pathways delineate sections. Section E is closest to York Street. It contains approximately 575 inscriptions. Section D lies opposite the church. It holds about 700 inscriptions.

Trinity United Church is more than just a building. It is a testament to faith, community, and history. Its enduring presence continues to shape Manchester. It provides support and spiritual guidance to those in need. Its story is a vital part of Manchester’s identity. As you leave, remember the steeple. Think about the bell. Recall the church’s long-standing commitment to Manchester.
