“Did you hear about the church that started in a theater?” Saint Mark’s Ministries, right here in Houston, has a fascinating history. It all began in October 1939. The very first service was held in a local neighborhood theater. Imagine the atmosphere, the plush seats, the faint scent of popcorn lingering in the air. By the end of that year, Saint Mark’s had its first priest and a dedicated group of volunteers. They even had preliminary plans for their very own church building. In August of the following year, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on Bellaire Boulevard. Just a few short weeks later, the cornerstone was laid. And in 1941, the building was officially dedicated. Saint Mark’s transitioned from a humble mission to a full-fledged parish. Throughout the years, Saint Mark’s continued to grow, becoming a cornerstone of the community. They even expanded their reach by establishing a day school for preschoolers in 1959. Today, that school, known as St. Mark’s Episcopal School, educates over 400 children, from toddlers to eighth graders. It’s amazing to think that this vibrant community all started with a simple service in a neighborhood theater.
