Did Heinrich Preuß ever imagine a steel plaque would mark his life? Here at Stargarder Straße 13, the Heinrich Preuß Plaque stands as a stark reminder of resistance and sacrifice. Heinrich Preuß, a baker and KPD member, lived here in the first-floor apartment of the side wing. The plaque, placed on the building around 1984, commemorates his fight against fascism. Preuß’s activism began with illegal union work, leading to a four-year prison sentence in 1935. After his release, he became a key figure in Robert Uhrig’s resistance group. This bravery led to his second arrest in February 1942. He was executed at Brandenburg Prison on August 28, 1944. The Heinrich Preuß Plaque isn’t the first memorial at this site. Around 1950, a marble plaque was placed above the entrance. It was later replaced around 1963. This earlier plaque, as documented in a 1960 Berliner Zeitung article, highlighted Preuß’s residence here. The current Heinrich Preuß Plaque serves as a powerful testament to his unwavering courage in the face of oppression. His story, etched in steel, reminds us of the sacrifices made in the fight for freedom.
