Rising majestically on a slightly elevated spot the Wallfahrtskirche St. Mariae Himmelfahrt dominates the village of Kirchhofen. This is no ordinary church. It’s a pilgrimage church a place steeped in history and faith.

Its origins trace back much further than its current structure suggests. While the present church largely dates from the early 16th century a predecessor dedicated to the Apostle Peter likely stood here as early as the 7th or 8th century. This speaks volumes about the enduring spiritual significance of this location. For centuries pilgrims flocked to Kirchhofen. The church itself reflects this rich history.

The year 1509 etched above the main portal marks a pivotal moment in the church’s evolution. Some even suggest it was 1409 but the church celebrated its 600th anniversary in 2009 suggesting some uncertainty about the exact date. Architectural details echo the grandeur of Freiburg Minster and St. Martin in Staufen showcasing a blend of influences.

The Thirty Years’ War however left its mark. In 1633 Swedish troops under Otto Ludwig von Salm-Kyrburg-Mörchingen razed Kirchhofen and its church to the ground. Tragically 300 peasants perished. Despite this devastation the pilgrimage to Wallfahrtskirche St. Mariae Himmelfahrt revived.

The church underwent significant transformations throughout the centuries. The tower’s distinctive octagonal top and onion dome were added in 1712. Interior embellishments came in two phases during the 18th century thanks to the Wessobrunner stucco artists Johann Georg Gigl and Franz Anton Vogel. Their work created a stunning visual feast. Jacob Carl Stauder a Swiss-German artist painted the remarkable ceiling frescoes.

These frescoes tell a compelling visual narrative. They depict scenes from the life of Jesus and Mary including the Assumption of Mary. The vibrant colors and intricate detail create a breathtaking spectacle. Notice the putti supporting a curtain inscribed “VENITE ADOREMUS” Come let us worship.

The altars themselves are works of art. Three of the five altars the high altar the rosary altar and the Sebastian altar remain largely unchanged from their original creation. The high altar’s rear features an inscription commemorating the 1633 tragedy.

Many other elements contribute to the church’s captivating ambiance. The carved figures of the apostles the impressive organ the bells and the intricate stucco work are all testaments to artistic skill. The church’s exterior is equally impressive. The white-red stucco shines under the sun. The surrounding walls the 1784 fountain and ancient trees combine to create a picturesque scene.

Wallfahrtskirche St. Mariae Himmelfahrt stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and faith. It has endured wars devastation and transformations. This church more than simply a place of worship. It is a living testament to the enduring spirit of Kirchhofen and a treasure for all who visit.
