Ever wondered what it takes to cross a border seamlessly between two nations? That is what the Sultan Iskandar Building is all about.

Welcome to the Sultan Iskandar Building in Johor Bahru. It is more than just a building. It is a vital connection point. It facilitates journeys between Malaysia and Singapore. This customs immigration and quarantine complex plays a crucial role. It ensures the smooth passage of people and goods.

The Sultan Iskandar Building is named after the late Sultan Iskandar of Johor. It stands as a testament to his legacy. The building occupies a sprawling area. It covers 232237 square metres. This makes it the largest CIQ complex in Malaysia.

Before this grand structure the Johor Bahru Checkpoint stood here. It was a simpler complex. It was established right on the Johor end of the Causeway. It was a two-storey building with limited lanes. It was for pedestrians buses cars and lorries. As traffic increased a better complex was needed.

The Southern Integrated Gateway project was proposed in 2002. It aimed to improve border crossing conditions. The plan included a new CIQ complex. It also featured new bus and train stations. Plus it had a new bridge to replace the Malaysian side of the Causeway. The CIQ was moved to Bukit Chagar. It would connect to the Tanjung Puteri bridge.

Despite some initial criticisms the Sultan Iskandar Building has become an essential part of the Johor Bahru landscape. It was fully operating in December 2008 for all motorists. It streamlines the border crossing process. It is also named in honour of the Sultan of Johor back then Sultan Iskandar Al-haj.

Imagine the flow of vehicles through its numerous counters. There are 38 counters for cars entering Malaysia. There are 39 counters for those departing. For motorcycles there are 50 counters in each direction. This is to manage the heavy traffic flow between Malaysia and Singapore.

All toll transactions at the Sultan Iskandar Building are electronic. They use Touch ‘n Go SmartTAG or MyRFID. This system was fully implemented in 2008. It ensures quick and easy payments. It reduces congestion at the toll booths.

The Sultan Iskandar Building is more than just a border checkpoint. It is a symbol of connection. It is a testament to efficient infrastructure. It embodies the spirit of Johor Bahru as a gateway to Malaysia.
