The imposing facade of the Basilica dei Santi Antonio Abate e Francesca Cabrini stands before us. Its history stretches back centuries. A fascinating journey awaits.
This basilica in Sant’Angelo Lodigiano is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to faith and perseverance. The current structure built between 1928 and 1938 replaced an older church. This older church’s history goes back to at least 1210. Imagine the countless prayers whispered within its walls over the ages.
The original church underwent several transformations. It was rebuilt in the 15th century. In 1535 it was dedicated to Saint Anthony Abbot. Around 1660 parishioners desired a more grand church. Don Domenico Longo the parish priest led the effort. Construction began in 1662 and concluded in 1673. The resulting church boasted three naves. It also featured four chapels on the right and three niches on the left. This church also had a baptistery.
The magnificent bell tower that we see today originates from this time period. It underwent alterations in 1787 taking on a Baroque style. In 1826 a neoclassical column topped with a statue of St Michael was added. This statue the work of Milanese sculptor Butti is a true masterpiece. Even the bell tower’s chime expanded from three to five bells in 1767.
The current basilica wasn’t always a reality. Early plans were made as early as 1859. Father Bassano Dedè Francesca Cabrini’s spiritual father initiated this. The project however suffered setbacks. The Second Italian War of Independence and World War I delayed construction. The project finally gained traction in 1921. Engineer Spirito Maria Chiappetta brought the vision to life. The foundation stone was laid on July 7 1928. Ten years later on October 28 1938 the basilica was consecrated. This was a momentous occasion as Francesca Cabrini’s beatification followed just thirteen days later.
The basilica’s interior wasn’t always as ornate as it appears today. Decoration began only in 1944. Painters Taragni and Arzuffi contributed significantly to the basilica’s beauty. They created the stunning frescoes and stained-glass windows. Further renovations to the presbytery followed in the 1960s. The original altar was moved in 1969. A new granite floor was laid in 1976.
Within the basilica remnants of earlier structures remain. The 15th-century Madonna del Rosario chapel is a treasure. Its original altar and Morazzone frescoes are particularly noteworthy. The 17th-century baptistery stands out. It’s where Saint Francesca Cabrini received the sacrament of baptism on July 15 1850.
The chapel dedicated to Saint Francesca Cabrini contains a precious reliquary. This reliquary holds one of the saint’s bones. The artwork within this chapel adds to the spiritual ambiance. The Basilica dei Santi Antonio Abate e Francesca Cabrini is indeed a place of extraordinary beauty. Its rich history and artistic significance make it a landmark worth exploring.
