Stepping onto the grounds of Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, do you sense the weight of history, the hopes, and the countless lives touched within these walls? Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi stands as a testament to the vision of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. He laid the foundation for this institution in 1926 as the Gazi Education Institute. Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi itself emerged later, in 1979. It began its journey under the wing of the Ankara Academy of Economics and Commercial Sciences.

Initially, the faculty’s home was the Dr. Muhittin Ülker Emergency and Traumatology Hospital in Balgat, Ankara. This arrangement was formalized through a protocol involving the academy, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, and the Türkiye Trafik Kazaları Yardım Vakfı (Turkish Traffic Accidents Aid Foundation). Imagine the bustling activity, the urgent cases, the fledgling faculty finding its feet in this dynamic environment. This was Ankara’s third medical faculty and Turkey’s 18th, a beacon of medical education in a rapidly developing nation.

Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi started modestly with seven faculty members, 17 assistants, and 100 eager students. The necessary basic medical laboratories were lacking in those early years. Resourcefully, land near the Faculty of Pharmacy in Gazi Mahallesi was acquired. Temporary structures were erected to serve as classrooms, labs, and a student cafeteria. The faculty dreamt of a modern medical center. Their search for a suitable site led them to an area between Konya Yolu and Çiftlik Kavşağı, where the cornerstone of the present Gazi Hospital was laid in November 1984.

By June 1985, Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi celebrated its first graduates. In 1986, the faculty moved to its new home. The newly constructed Gazi Hospital became fully operational, marking a significant milestone in the faculty’s evolution. Growth continued steadily. Prefabricated additions addressed the need for faculty offices. A modern education block with state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories opened its doors. By 1989, the faculty had grown to 320 faculty members and 1378 students.

The hospital expansion continued, aided by a loan from the European Council Social Development Fund in December 1990 and another from a joint Turkish-French Economic Commission meeting in September 1991, securing essential medical equipment. The new polyclinic building opened in 1994, followed by inpatient facilities, laboratories, and medical imaging units in 1997. Gazi Hospital achieved ISO 9001 Quality Assurance System certification in 1998, a testament to its commitment to excellence. The new emergency service and additional hospital blocks were inaugurated in 2000. Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi stands today as a symbol of progress and innovation, dedicated to training future generations of medical professionals. From its humble beginnings, Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi has grown into a respected institution, shaping the landscape of healthcare in Turkey.
