The former Lille-Saint Sauveur railway station a place once dedicated to freight now boasts a lively public space.

The mural itself is a captivating spectacle. Hundreds of Renés gaze upon us. René a cyclops created by Di Rosa in the 1980s is the heart of the piece. He is a small cyclops with a single eye a large mouth and two legs. This unusual character worked in a factory and had numerous children. His family now welcomes visitors to the Saint-Sauveur area. Each René is unique. They represent the diversity of Lille’s inhabitants. They reflect a multitude of ages backgrounds and conditions.

The project was ambitious. It required the creation of sixty ceramic figures. These were manufactured in Lisbon at one of Portugal’s oldest azulejo factories A Viuva Lamego. Di Rosa has a long-standing practice of collaborating with skilled artisans worldwide. This project continues his commitment to diverse artistic techniques and locations. The finished mural is impressive. It measures four meters by ten meters. The artwork was inaugurated on August 31 2017. Lille’s mayor Martine Aubry presided over the ceremony.

The ceramic Renés bring a touch of whimsical charm to their urban setting. Their bright colors and expressive faces evoke a sense of warmth and community. Di Rosa draws inspiration from popular culture comic books and animation. He even mentions Jérôme Bosch and Dubuffet as influences. The vibrant energy of the artwork reflects his approach to art. He focuses on the energy he infuses into the creation. It is meant to be captured by those who encounter it. This artwork succeeds in transforming a former industrial site. It has become a vibrant and welcoming landmark for the city. The Gare Saint-Sauveur is now a space where history and art intertwine. It is a perfect example of Lille’s commitment to urban renewal and artistic expression. Le Peuple René a unique and unforgettable mural adds color and energy to Lille’s artistic landscape.
