“A stadium built on ancient whispers,” a local farmer once told me, pointing towards the towering structure of Estadio Deportivo Cali, often called Pte Palmaseca. It’s not just a stadium. It’s a vessel overflowing with dreams, echoing with roars, and steeped in a history as rich as the sugarcane fields that once surrounded it. Deportivo Cali, the club that calls Pte Palmaseca home, dreamt of this stadium for years. Inspired by Ecuadorian stadiums, the club began planning their own grand arena in the late 1990s. The nearby city of Palmira, eager to host such a prestigious venue, offered a tempting 10-year tax-exempt deal. Construction began in 2002 on the road from Cali to Palmira, near Cali’s airport. However, the journey to completion was far from smooth. The discovery of ancient indigenous remains and ceramics brought construction to a halt, a poignant reminder of the land’s deep history. Further setbacks, like iron shortages and water supply issues, tested the club’s resolve. Finally, on October 29, 2008, Pte Palmaseca hosted its first match, a friendly between Deportivo Cali and Liga de Quito. The stadium was only half-finished, a testament to the arduous journey. It took until February 2010 for Pte Palmaseca to be officially inaugurated. Even then, it wasn’t immediately Deportivo Cali’s permanent home. Pte Palmaseca’s location, amidst farmland about 15 kilometers from central Cali, presents a unique challenge for fans. While buses run regularly between Cali and Palmira, the stadium requires a 15-minute walk from the main road. A taxi, as many locals will tell you, is often the preferred mode of transport. Despite the logistical hurdles, Pte Palmaseca stands as a symbol of Deportivo Cali’s ambition and a monument to the enduring spirit of Colombian football. It’s a place where ancient whispers meet modern roars, where history intertwines with the beautiful game.
