Hidden amidst the peaks of Huangyuan Village in Beijing’s Pinggu District lies the mystical 千佛. 千佛, meaning “Thousand Buddhas”, is a breathtaking spectacle carved into the cliff face. This isn’t your typical temple. The natural lines and hues of the rock enhance the beauty of the carvings. The lush vegetation adds a touch of mystery. The site is currently closed to the public. Some say it has been abandoned, yet its allure persists. Located near Tianyun Mountain, adventurous souls still find their way to 千佛. They climb the mountain near the Tianyun Mountain parking lot, bypassing the sealed gate and clambering over the wire mesh fence. A precarious path leads upward. The original wooden walkway has decayed due to neglect. But the route, though challenging, is still passable.

The path winds its way to Guanyin Temple and continues further to a stone platform. From this platform, you can use iron ladders to reach the top of the cliff where the real magic begins. This is where your journey into a world of Buddhist carvings truly commences. The carvings at 千佛 depict various figures, including the Four Heavenly Kings and the Five Hundred Arhats. As you explore, you’ll discover the detailed full-body image of the interpretive Manjushri at the mountain entrance. Further on, esoteric carvings and sculptures of the Three Buddhas come into view. The climb is strenuous, with some sections requiring a near scramble. But the reward is well worth the effort.

Along the way, you’ll find the carvings of the Luohan and the Bodhisattva. Their expressions are remarkably lifelike, capturing their serene nature and spiritual depth. The artistry and skillful execution of these carvings suggest they were not made by local villagers. Even with modern tools, completing such a project would be a herculean task. The precise dating of these carvings remains a mystery. Some experts believe they are from the Liao-Song period. But the crispness of some carvings hints at a more recent origin.

Look closely at the details. The graceful lines of the Luohan carvings, the flowing robes, the serene expressions. These elements point to a high level of artistic skill. Notice the larger Buddha statues further up. Their large ears, protruding foreheads, and full faces show a distinct style. The various postures, the serene expressions, the mythical creatures they ride. Each detail tells a story, revealing glimpses into Buddhist narratives. One prominent figure is the Bodhisattva with a radiating halo. His closed eyes and peaceful demeanor invite contemplation. And at the peak, a massive Buddha statue dominates the scene. His large ears, flowing robes, and hand gestures symbolize wisdom and compassion.

The path descends towards a landmark called “Southern Heaven’s Gate”, a simple structure marking a perilous stone path down. 千佛 and Southern Heaven’s Gate form a circular route. It is highly recommended to visit 千佛 first to experience the carvings in their proper sequence. The entire trek covers nearly 4,000 meters. Along the return path, more poems carved into the rocks come into view. Reflect on the profound spiritual atmosphere of this hidden sanctuary. The beauty of the carvings, the serenity of the mountain, the mystery of their creation. It’s a place that stays with you long after you leave.
