Ever heard of a deity rescued from the waves? That is part of the story of Soga Hime Jinja. We are standing before Soga Hime Jinja in Chiba. This Shinto shrine has a history stretching back 1500 years.

Soga Hime Jinja’s story starts with Prince Yamato Takeru. He was a legendary figure in ancient Japan. The prince was on an eastern expedition. As he crossed from Sagami to Kazusa strong winds threatened his fleet. To calm the sea’s fury Princess Ototachibana threw herself into the waves. She sacrificed herself for the prince’s safety. Five other women followed her into the sea. Among them was Soga Hime. She was the wife of Soga no Oomi. Soga Hime was washed ashore. Local villagers rescued her. She eventually returned home safely.

The villagers revered Prince Yamato Takeru. They built a shrine to honor him. Emperor Ojin was moved by their devotion. He appointed the Soga clan as governors of the region. The Soga clan had long revered the Kasuga and Hikawa shrines. They established Soga Hime Jinja. This enshrined the spirits of both.

Another legend links Soga Hime Jinja to Soga no Akae. He was a member of the Soga clan. He fell from grace after the Jinshin War in 672. He was exiled to the province of Kazusa. Some say the shrine was built to honor Soga no Akae and his wife. A final tale tells of Princess Ototachibana’s body. It washed ashore. Villagers embraced her spirit. She declared “Ware Soga ari.” This means “I am Soga.” The area became known as Soga.

Soga Hime Jinja is listed in the Engishiki Jinmyocho. This is a record of important shrines. It was compiled in the Heian period. Soga Hime Jinja was designated as a minor shrine. During the medieval period it was the guardian shrine of the Chiba clan. From the Meiji era until the end of World War II it was ranked as a village shrine.

The shrine has hand-washing basin and a torii gate. The main deities enshrined at Soga Hime Jinja are Amaterasu Omikami. This is the Sun Goddess. Also enshrined is Emperor Ojin and Soga Hime no Okami. Also worshiped here are Mitama no Kami and Uketama no Kami.

Over the centuries Soga Hime Jinja has been a place of reverence. It has been destroyed by fire and rebuilt. Today it stands as a testament to faith. It embodies sacrifice and resilience. Local people still honor it. They seek blessings for safety at sea. They pray for peace and prosperity. They wish for good fortune. They ask for recovery from illness. Soga Hime Jinja is a place where the past connects with the present. It is a reminder of the enduring power of belief.
