The shopping district evolved during the Meiji period. Today it offers a glimpse into Osaka’s merchant past. The Osaka Living Museum is nearby on 6-chome. It recreates the town’s life from the Edo period to the Showa period.

Tenjimbashisuji 6-chome has also seen tragedy. In 1970, a gas explosion occurred during the construction of the Tanimachi Line. Seventy-nine people died. 420 people were injured. The gas leak caused a massive explosion. It destroyed hundreds of homes and buildings.

Before 1969, the Hankyu Senri Line terminated at Tenjinbashi Station. The station opened in 1925. The Sakaisuji Line’s opening led to the construction of the underground Tenjimbashisuji 6-chome Station. The old station building stood until 2009. It was demolished to make way for high-rise condominiums.

Tenjimbashisuji 6-chome is conveniently accessible. It is served by the Osaka Metro Tanimachi Line. The Sakaisuji Line also stops here. Furthermore, the Hankyu Railway Senri Line provides access.
