Picture Central Baptist Church standing tall. Its history whispers from its very stones. This isn’t just any church. It’s a place where faith took root and grew against all odds. Founded in 1933 in the humble home of Sister Sara Pugh Central Baptist Church faced hardship. The Great Depression cast a long shadow. Reverend Baker the first pastor struggled. He even sought the help of Reverend W M Middleton of Canaan Baptist Church.

Central Baptist Church found new life under Reverend Middleton’s guidance. Sadly misunderstandings led to his resignation. Yet the church persevered. Deacon Isaac Stevens and other faithful members held it together. Then a young man Reverend Charles Roosevelt Walker arrived. He became the shepherd this congregation needed.

By 1937 Central Baptist Church thrived. Its membership swelled. The existing space proved too small. The church purchased a property at 2152-58 Fifth Avenue. On Thanksgiving Day 1939 a momentous move occurred. The congregation marched into their new house of worship.

Two major renovations followed in 1945. Reverend Walker continued his dedicated service until his death in 1960. He left behind a strong church financially and spiritually. Again the congregation faced a leadership void. Deacon Joseph Walker and other devoted members stepped up.

Reverend Peter L Mouzon became pastor in 1961. He led the church to pay off two mortgages totaling approximately 62000. His tenure lasted until 1984. After his passing Deacon Luther Wright and Reverend Elbert Monroe ensured the church’s stability. Reverend Monroe became pastor in 1987 serving until 1994.

Central Baptist Church continued to adapt and evolve. Reverend Anthony J Chisom served from 1997 to 2004. Reverend Terry L Baker followed briefly in 2008. Finally in 2014 Reverend Frank Hawkins a member of the church itself became pastor.

Central Baptist Church’s story isn’t just about buildings and pastors. It’s a testament to enduring faith resilience and community. It’s a living legacy built on prayers perseverance and unwavering devotion. From a humble home to a prominent place of worship Central Baptist Church stands as a beacon of hope in New York City.
