Did Bucharest always have a bustling marketplace like Hala Traian? Absolutely! Hala Traian stands as a testament to Bucharest’s rich commercial history. Opened in 1896, Hala Traian is the oldest covered market still operating in Bucharest. Designed by Italian architect Giulio Magni, it was inspired by Parisian market halls. Hala Traian quickly became the heart of the city’s Jewish Quarter. Imagine the vibrant atmosphere. Vendors hawked fresh meats, colorful vegetables, and exotic colonial goods. The market buzzed with activity. Two grand staircases led down to the basement, a cool haven housing twelve tanks teeming with live fish, storage rooms, and the latest refrigeration technology. Sadly, during the communist era, Hala Traian’s industrial charm was whitewashed. Literally. The brickwork was covered, and additional commercial spaces cluttered the exterior. Its original form was distorted. After the revolution, the interior fell into disrepair. Thankfully, around 2000, the Belgian Delhaize Group, known for its Mega Image supermarkets in Romania, took over the space. They restored the brickwork, bringing Hala Traian closer to its original glory. The exterior additions, though, remain. Today, Hala Traian thrives once more. It stands as a symbol of Bucharest’s enduring spirit of commerce. A blend of old and new, where history and modern life intertwine.
