Why does Mission Bautista Ebenezer stand as a beacon of faith? It is a place where the spiritual relational and physical needs of God’s people are met. This mission follows the teachings of Matthew 28:19. It says to teach all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit.

Mission Bautista Ebenezer is more than a church. It is a place where the spirit of Jesus Christ guides acts of service and love. They liberate the oppressed from sin social political and financial burdens. The mission transforms lives through education development and guidance. It helps people become authentic individuals that God wants them to be.

At Mission Bautista Ebenezer believers present their bodies as living sacrifices. This shows God’s presence as experienced through Jesus Christ. They worship God fully and serve one another with love.

The church embodies six key aspects found in the Acts of the Apostles. These are evangelism discipleship fellowship worship stewardship and outreach. Mission Bautista Ebenezer practices these truths as one. They strive to be the church that God has called them to be.

Primera Iglesia Bautista Houston started an outreach in the 1940s. It served impoverished families in the Near Northside. This outreach became the Mexican Goodwill Center. It offered daycare and food to needy families especially single mothers.

In 1962 the property was given to the Union Baptist Association. Churches across Houston joined to support the work. Volunteers and donations poured in. Mildred McWhorter became the director. The community knew her as Miss Mac. For three decades she was the face of Baptist ministry in inner-city Houston.

The Fletcher Center became known for food clothing after-school programs and more. They also offered senior programs ESL classes and Bible study. Worship services were held here. A second location opened on Gano Street. It was called the Gano Center. A building was donated to house visiting missionaries. Another mission started in Houston’s East End. It was named the Joy Center. Miss Mac said the children always looked joyful when she visited.

In 1980 the Fletcher Gano and Joy Centers became Baptist Mission Centers. After Miss Mac’s retirement the focus shifted to community development. The goal was to fight generational poverty. College missionaries volunteered for summers semesters or entire years. In 2007 the Mildred McWhorter Missionary Building replaced the Gano building. It housed offices and missionary residences.

In 2008 the organization became Mission Centers of Houston. This allowed for broader ministry and partnerships. Today Mission Centers of Houston works closely with the Near Northside and Magnolia Park communities. Staff members live in the communities they serve. Husband and wife teams oversee the mission work. Family members volunteer. This helps them understand community needs. They model a Christ-centered family. Volunteers and staff are recruited from within the community. This increases trust.

In 2023 they launched The Compassion Center. This expands their reach to vulnerable communities in Houston. They train and equip missionaries and church planters. They also support Gospel-based nonprofits.

For nearly 60 years Mission Centers of Houston has transformed lives. It does so through the love mercy and grace of Jesus Christ. They will continue this work. The mission of Ebenezer Baptist Church is a testament to faith in action. It is a story of community service dedicated leadership and unwavering commitment. It reminds us of the power of faith to transform lives and uplift communities.
