Have you ever wondered about the secrets held within those elegant walls? Right before you stands the Goßlerhaus a magnificent building with a rich history.

The Goßlerhaus began its life in 1794 as a private country house. English merchant John Blacker commissioned the renowned Danish architect Christian Frederik Hansen to build it. The result was a stunning classical-style single-story building. It featured columns on all four sides. Blacker also created an English-style park around the house.

Ownership changed hands several times during the 19th century. In 1897 John Henry Goßler a prominent trader with significant business interests in East and South Africa acquired the estate. He expanded the house adding a second story. Tragedy struck in 1901. A fire destroyed much of the wooden structure. Goßler rebuilt it faithfully replicating the original design but this time using stone. This ensured its longevity. This smart decision saved the precious building.

The municipality of Blankenese purchased the Goßlerhaus and its park in 1924. It served as the town hall. Blankenese later became part of Hamburg. The Goßlerhaus continued as a town hall until 2005. It also hosted cultural events lectures and concerts. There was even a literary cafe and summer concerts took place in the park.

For decades after World War II the Goßlerhaus received only essential maintenance. To save this valuable building publisher Klaus Schümann along with Blankenese citizens formed a support association. The association successfully renovated the garden hall where generations had been married. Weddings continue there today.

After a reorganization of the administration in 2005 the district of Altona no longer needed the Goßlerhaus. A Blankenese patron anonymously bought it. He extensively renovated the Goßlerhaus. He then established a non-profit foundation to manage it. Since 2017 the Hamburger Konservatorium has been its tenant using it for teaching studies and concerts. The Goßlerhaus also continues to host cultural events. The Janssen Library showcases the works of Horst Janssen the artist who lived in Blankenese. This ensures that the Goßlerhaus remains a vibrant hub of culture and history accessible to everyone.
