Whispers of faith linger here. This is New Mount Zion Baptist Church. A beacon of hope since its humble beginnings. Five women a dream. In 1946 their vision took shape. They sought a church closer to their homes. The lower White Rock area needed a place of worship. These pioneering families the Bonners and the Subers worked tirelessly. They established New Mount Zion in the home of Bro and Sis William Suber. They were members of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church. They wanted their own community church.
New Mount Zion began modestly. They met in a home then a tent. The congregation built its first church on the Bonner property. Many pitched in. Donations were plentiful. Bent nails were straightened and reused. The community came together. The church is a testament to their collective effort. They later purchased the land from Bro Emanuel Bonner. This shows the growth of the church family.
Under the guidance of Rev TJ Jernigan the church thrived. Auxiliaries formed including an Usher Board and a Youth Department. The church grew steadily. It expanded beyond its humble beginnings. Rev CC Anderson and later Rev WE Harvey continued this growth. They guided the congregation during significant changes.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 changed everything. The Richardson Independent School District desegregated. Many people moved north of Dallas. Medical City Hospital was built. New Mount Zion had to relocate. They purchased land in the Stults Road community. Under the dynamic leadership of Rev RE Price the church expanded greatly. He served for over 42 years. Membership soared reaching over 2000. Numerous ministries were established.
The church continued to grow. It expanded its building several times. A new sanctuary was built a Family Life Center established. A credit union even existed. The church hosted major events including national conventions. Rev RE Price was a pivotal figure. His vision and leadership propelled New Mount Zion to new heights. He is remembered for his benevolence and kindness. His legacy lives on within these walls. Today the New Mount Zion Baptist Church stands as a symbol of faith perseverance and community. It is a living testament to a dream realized a community united in worship.
