“Imagine a place,” I say, “where the ocean’s mysteries meet the precision of engineering.” That place is the B1a 海洋科学与工程学院, the College of Ocean Science and Engineering. It is located here in Guangzhou. This college is not just a building. It’s a hub of innovation and learning.
The College of Ocean Science and Engineering at Shanghai Maritime University develops quickly. It has made outstanding achievements in both teaching and research. Here, students delve into the depths of marine engineering. They explore coastal and ocean engineering management. They also study transportation safety.
The college offers many programs. These programs include four doctorate authorizations. They cover marine engineering material. They also include design and manufacture of ships and marine structures. There are also master’s degree programs. These are in Safety Science and Engineering. They also cover Water conservancy engineering.
The college also offers bachelor’s degrees. These degrees include Environmental Engineering. They also offer Safety Engineering. Students can also study Harbor Waterway and Coastal Engineering. Other options include Shipping and Ocean Engineering and Materials science and engineering.
The faculty is well-structured. It has a good academic reputation. It consists of 98 lecturers. Twenty-four of them are professors. Twenty are associate professors. Ninety-three percent of the lecturers hold doctoral degrees. The college has one Shanghai Teaching Master. It also has two Teaching Masters of Shanghai Maritime University. There are 1254 undergraduate students. There are also 292 postgraduate students.
Research is a cornerstone of the College of Ocean Science and Engineering. The college’s main research areas are diverse. They include preparation and corrosion control of steel materials in extreme marine environments. They also study microbial adhesion mechanisms and antifouling technology of marine materials. The college also researches high-tech ship design and manufacturing. They also focus on design, construction, and performance evaluation of marine structures. The college researches hydrodynamic performance of ships and marine structures.
Maritime transport safety and public safety engineering are also studied here. Fire explosion and hazardous chemical safety are researched. Ship and port pollution prevention technology is also a focus. The college also studies environmental pollution control technology for offshore waters. Coastal and deep seawater dynamics are examined. Port and coastal engineering technology is also part of the research. Deep-sea materials research has reached an international advanced level here.
The College of Ocean Science and Engineering boasts impressive facilities. There are more than 14,700 square meters of teaching and scientific research experimental areas. Nearly RMB 50 million has been invested in recent years. The institute has two National-level Engineering Practice Education Centers. These are partnerships with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group and CCCC Third Harbor Engineering Limited Company.
Collaboration is key to the college’s success. It has established agreements with enterprises and institutions. These include China Shipping Company and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Company. Other partners include Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration and CCCC Third Harbor Engineering Limited Company. Shanghai Sea Area Development Company and East China Sea Environmental Monitoring Center are also partners.
The College of Ocean Science and Engineering embraces international collaboration. It invites foreign experts to give lectures and carry out academic exchanges. Shanghai Maritime University and Massachusetts Maritime Academy have a “2+2” joint education program. Undergraduates in Environmental Engineering and Safety Engineering can study at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. They can earn bachelor’s degrees from both SMU and MMA. Each year, the college selects undergraduates to study for half a year in Massachusetts.
