Asahi Ward is one of Osaka’s 24 wards. It sits to the northeast of the city. It’s near Moriguchi. Asahi became its own ward in 1932. It split from Higashinari.

Did you know Asahi Ward is divided into smaller towns? These include Shimizu and Morishoji. There’s also Omiya and Nakamiya. You’ll find Takadono, Akagawa, and Ikue. Shinmori, Senbayashi, Taishibashi, and Imaichi are also here. Each has its own distinct feel.

Getting around Asahi Ward is easy. Three subway lines serve the area. The Tanimachi Line connects you to Tennoji. The Imazato Suji Line links you to central Osaka. The Keihan Line provides access to Moriguchi. It also goes to Higashi-Osaka.

Notice the Korean influence here in Asahi Ward. Many Korean shops and restaurants dot the area. Johoku Elementary School is here. It’s one of the few schools in Japan with direct ties to North Korea.

Don’t worry, the Korean community is friendly. They’re known for excellent barbecue. Some say Asahi Ward is second only to Tsuruhashi for Korean barbecue.

Want a recommendation? Try One Karubi. It’s a bit of a walk from Shirokitakoendori Station. But it’s worth it. Try the Bibinbap. It’s a flavorful fried rice dish. It’s served in a stone bowl. It’s a mix of spicy and sweet.

After eating, enjoy a riverside walk. Shirokita Park offers peace and quiet. Osaka has surprising amounts of green space. Shirokita Park is great for cherry blossom viewing. It’s less crowded than Sakuranomiya.

Just past the park is Shirokita Wand. These ponds come from the Yodogawa River. Enjoy riverside views. You can photograph Akagawa Bridge. You might see ducks. Locals say it’s a good fishing spot.

Ready to shop? Senbayashi Shotengai is a must-see. This covered street has many local shops. Some have been here for generations. The street even has its own theme song. You can hear it as you walk.

Feeling adventurous? The fish market sells whale meat. It’s a unique experience. It might be too fatty for some. But it’s worth trying once.
