The Raab Galerie was founded in former West Berlin in 1978. For 23 years it was located in a Bauhaus building. This building was at Potsdamer Brücke and had five-meter-high walls. The Raab Galerie quickly became famous. It showed huge works by young Berlin artists. These artists included Elvira Bach, Rainer Fetting and Markus Lüpertz. K.H. Hödicke also exhibited here.
The Raab Galerie proved to be a meeting point. Emerging international artists gathered here. Enzo Cucchi and Ernesto Tatafiore came from Italy. Michel Alberola and Gerard Garouste came from France. Donald Sultan and Chuck Close came from the United States. Christopher le Brun hailed from Great Britain.
After the Berlin Wall fell, Raab Galerie expanded its portfolio. They added Hubertus Giebe. He was a former master student of Bernard Heisig. He also lectured at the Kunstakademie Dresden.
Street art has become important over the last ten years. It started with El Bocho, an artist from Berlin. He is now known internationally. Harald Klemm and Thomas Baumgärtel use stencils. Currently, the Raab Galerie is showing Karoline Kroiss’s new works. The exhibit opened January 18, 2025, and runs until February 22, 2025. Karoline Kroiss has worked with the gallery for over twenty years. Her art is quiet, restrained and humorous. Her work includes portraits, still lifes and landscapes. She feels most comfortable creating people she can explore while painting.
