Picture this: The sun beats down on Casa de la Baronesa. A weathered wooden structure stands before you. Its history whispers secrets of intrigue and tragedy.

Welcome to Casa de la Baronesa a place interwoven with the dramatic saga of Floreana Island. This isn’t just a building it’s a stage for one of the Galapagos’ most captivating mysteries the Galapagos Affair. The Casa de la Baronesa was envisioned as a luxury hotel Hacienda Paradiso a dream of the self-proclaimed Baroness Eloise Wehrborn de Wagner-Bosquet.

The Baroness a woman of mystery arrived in 1932 with two lovers Rudolf Lorenz and Robert Philippson. She planned a grand hotel for wealthy American tourists. She brought cows donkeys chickens and 80 hundredweight of cement. But paradise remained elusive. The hotel never materialized. Instead a simple corrugated iron shack with two rooms stood as a testament to her failed ambition.

The Baroness’s arrival disrupted the lives of other settlers. Friedrich Ritter and Dore Strauch German vegetarians arrived earlier seeking a simple life. The Wittmer family also arrived hoping the climate would improve their son’s health.

Competition for scarce resources heightened tensions. The Baroness controlled water supplies mail and food deliveries. She expelled unwanted visitors at gunpoint. Relationships fractured. Ritter allegedly abused Strauch. Lorenz became ill and was treated as a slave by Philippson. He feared for his life.

In 1934 the Baroness and Philippson vanished. Their disappearance remains unsolved. Lorenz sold their belongings. He hired a Norwegian fisherman but died of thirst on Marchena Island. His body and the fisherman’s were found. The boat and a ship boy vanished.

Ritter soon died of food poisoning. Dore Strauch was a suspect. She allegedly gave him undercooked chicken a strange irony for a vegetarian.

Casa de la Baronesa stands as a haunting reminder. A symbol of ambition betrayal and unanswered questions. It’s a place where history comes alive a testament to the extraordinary drama that unfolded on this remote island. The story of the Baroness and the Galapagos Affair lives on in the very walls of this humble dwelling.
