The Chiesa del Carmine Maggiore stands on a site occupied by a church as early as the 13th century. Carmelite monks arriving from the Holy Land around 1235 established a presence here. They weren’t the first though. Evidence suggests a much older chapel existed. Gothic tracery in one of the chapels points to this earlier structure. The current building is a blend of eras a testament to layers of faith and devotion. The architectural style is predominantly Baroque reflecting the era of its major construction.

Step inside. Notice the Latin cross layout. The central nave is flanked by two aisles. Twelve columns of Billiemi stone support the structure. Look up. Giovanni Patricolo’s frescoes once adorned the ceiling. Sadly only one remains the “Gift of the Scapular”. But the remaining artwork is still impressive. Vincenzo Messina’s statues of St Elias John the Baptist Jonah and Moses reside in niches. They are a subtle blend of religious and historical figures. The exterior dome tiled with maiolica is a sight to behold.

The interior is a treasure trove of artistic and religious significance. Giacomo Serpotta a master of stucco work embellished the Madonna del Carmine chapel. This chapel is a breathtaking example of Baroque artistry. Many more chapels line the naves. Each one holds unique artistic and historical value. They boast artworks from various periods by notable Sicilian artists. These works represent religious scenes as well as symbolic elements. They tell stories of the Carmelite order its saints and patrons.
