It’s one of 14 quarters making up Bergedorf a district known for its tranquil atmosphere. Lohbrügge though is a microcosm of Hamburg itself a blend of nature and urban sprawl.
Think of Lohbrügge as a patchwork quilt. One section is the Boberger Düne a landscape conservation area with sand dunes. Quite unique for Hamburg. Here you can hike and breathe the fresh air. Then there’s the built-up area. A mix of older houses with gardens and modern apartment blocks.
Some buildings are noteworthy. There’s a huge apartment complex nicknamed the Lindwurm or ‘Lindworm’. It’s one of the biggest in Hamburg a true testament to post-war architecture. Bergedorf station provides access to the S-Bahn lines S2 and S21 linking it to the wider city. Buses offer more local connections within Lohbrügge and its surroundings.
In 2006 the area saw 3935 criminal offenses. The police station in Bergedorf has responsibility for the area. Today however Lohbrügge is a peaceful place. It’s a place where history and progress meet. A community with a past striving towards a future. It’s a quarter that’s very much worth exploring.
