Did the wind whisper secrets to Wal Handley as he navigated this very curve? Handley’s Corner. Even the name evokes a sense of speed and daring. This S-bend, just before the 12th Milestone on the Snaefell Mountain Course, has witnessed countless races, triumphs, and tragedies. Handley’s Corner, formerly Ballamenagh Corner, wasn’t always named for the legendary racer. It earned its current name in 1932 when Wal Handley, astride his Rudge motorcycle, crashed heavily during the Senior TT. He injured his back and had to retire from the race. The incident, however, cemented his name into the history of the course. Handley’s Corner is more than just a bend in the road. It represents the spirit of the Isle of Man TT. It embodies the courage, skill, and sometimes, the misfortune of the racers who push themselves and their machines to the limit. Before it was known as Handley’s Corner, this bend, nestled amidst the Ballamenagh and Shoughlaige-e-Caine farmland, was part of the Highland Course and the Four Inch Course. These historic tracks hosted the Gordon Bennett Trial and Tourist Trophy car races from 1904 to 1922. It even played a part in the St John’s Short Course, used for the TT races between 1907 and 1910. Since 1911, Handley’s Corner has been an integral part of the Snaefell Mountain Course for both the TT and, from 1923, the Manx Grand Prix. The corner has seen changes over the years. Road widening and reprofiling took place in the winter of 1953/1954, preparing the course for the 1954 TT races. Further road repair work was carried out between 2003 and 2006, ensuring the safety and performance of this crucial section of the track. Stand here, at Handley’s Corner, and imagine the roar of the engines. Picture the bikes leaning into the curve. Feel the rush of wind as the racers hurtle past. Wal Handley’s legacy, like the echo of those powerful engines, continues to resonate at Handley’s Corner.
