Welcome to Chunshu Subdistrict. It is a vibrant subdistrict in Beijing’s Xicheng District. Its history is as rich as the aroma of those ancient mahogany trees.
Chunshu Subdistrict has an interesting past. It has seen many changes throughout the dynasties. During the Jin dynasty, this area was part of Jiahui Ward. Later, in the Ming dynasty, it became part of Xuanbei Ward. During the Qing dynasty under the Qianlong Emperor, Chunshu was integrated into the Outer Urban District. It was part of the Northern City. Later during the reign of Xuantong Emperor, it was divided into the Right 1st and 2nd Outer Districts.
In 1912, Chunshu became part of the 2nd Outer District. By 1949, it was incorporated into the 9th District. A year later, it shifted to the 6th District. In 1952, it became part of Qianmen District. In 1954, three subdistricts named Xiangluying, Chunshuxia Toutiao, and Maxian were created. But in 1958, these three were combined. They formed what we now know as Chunshu Subdistrict.
For a brief period in 1958, Chunshu was transferred under Xuanwu District. Then it was made into a people’s commune in September 1962. However, it was later restored as a subdistrict. In 2010, Chunshu was transferred back under Xicheng District.
Today, Chunshu Subdistrict is home to over 27,417 residents. This data was recorded in 2020. The subdistrict covers an area of 1.08 square kilometers. That makes it a densely populated area with about 25,000 people per square kilometer.
As of 2021, Chunshu Subdistrict is divided into seven communities. These communities include Xuanwumenwai Dongdajie. There is also Liulichang Xijie. Another is Chunshuyuan. You will also find Sichuanying. Liangjiayuan is another community. Xiangluying is also part of it and last but not least Yongguang.
