Did you know that Albert Einstein once called his summer house near Scharfe Lanke his “Spandau Castle”? Scharfe Lanke is a beautiful bay of the Havel River in Berlin’s Wilhelmstadt district. It’s a picturesque spot with a rich history. Einstein rented a small property there in the early 1920s. He loved to escape to his “castle” for some peace and quiet. He could also indulge in his passion for sailing. The promenade near Scharfe Lanke had convenient landing stages and many sailing clubs. He often sailed his boat on the Havel. He even sailed to visit his friend Janos Plesch in Gatow. Plesch’s country estate Villa Lemm was a frequent destination. There Einstein would sometimes play the violin. Einstein’s “Spandau Castle” wasn’t always idyllic. His leaky sailing boat needed constant repairs. He also neglected his garden. The district administration even threatened to evict him for letting the garden become overgrown. Eventually Einstein’s tenancy at Scharfe Lanke ended. But today a memorial plaque near Scharfe Lanke commemorates his time there. The plaque stands in the Bocksfelde weekend property. It depicts Einstein with a quote. The quote is a testament to his time at Scharfe Lanke. “My castle proves to be more watertight than my sailing boat.” The quote reminds us of Einstein’s charming blend of genius and everyday life. The Scharfe Lanke is more than just a pretty bay. It holds a unique piece of Einstein’s history. A history that adds to the charm and intrigue of this special place. So next time you’re at Scharfe Lanke remember Einstein’s “Spandau Castle”. Remember his leaky boat and his neglected garden. Remember the genius who found peace and inspiration in this very spot.
