Deep within Shenzhen, a story of maritime faith awaits. The Dexuan Ancient Temple is not just a building. It is a testament to the enduring power of belief. This temple echoes with the prayers of sailors and fishermen. They seek protection from the vast and unpredictable South China Sea.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine yourself in the Song Dynasty around 1410. That is when the original Dexuan Ancient Temple was built. It was a humble structure then. Today, it stands as a beacon of cultural heritage. It has survived destruction and multiple rebuilds. The Dexuan Ancient Temple is currently undergoing another revival. This ensures its legacy continues for generations.

The temple is dedicated to Tian Hou. She is the goddess of the sea, also known as Matsu. Coastal people throughout South Asia revere her. They believe she protects those who depend on the ocean. Tian Hou’s story is fascinating. She was born in 960 AD on an island off the coast of China. She was born into a family of fishermen. Legend says she gained her goddess status after saving her brother from drowning in a typhoon. Some say she died searching for her father in the same storm. Others believe she ascended to be with the gods. Regardless, her fame spread. Now, more than 1500 temples are dedicated to her in 26 countries.

Inside the Dexuan Ancient Temple, you will find a large golden statue of Tian Hou. It dominates the main hall. Lesser deities surround her. These include Caishen the god of wealth and Guanyin the bodhisattva of compassion. In the corner, you might notice Tian Hou’s bed and furniture. These are used in the annual celebration of her birthday. This happens on the 23rd day of the 3rd month of the Chinese Lunar calendar. During this time, the temple comes alive. Visitors witness tradition and history intertwined.

A famous Ming admiral, Zheng He, is closely linked to the Dexuan Ancient Temple. Legend says that Emperor Zhu Di commissioned him to sail west. Near Chiwan, a ferocious storm halted Zheng He’s fleet. The goddess Tian Hou appeared to the emperor. She claimed she had saved his fleet. She requested a temple be built nearby. This would be an expression of his gratitude. Zheng He agreed. He and his men built the original temple. He personally planted the first “wish giving tree” in the courtyard.

To the right of the temple stands Zheng He’s “Celestial Tree.” It is weighed down with lucky red cards and ribbons. Scaffolding supports its ancient branches. You can inscribe your prayers and wishes. Then you can tie them to the tree. This eases your troubled mind.

Two loyal generals guard a decorative portal. They are Chien Li Yen and Shun Feng Er. Their postures demonstrate their protective abilities. They can “see” and “hear” anyone who might cause trouble for Tian Hou.

While exploring the main courtyard, look at the two-story drum tower. The bell tower is currently closed for renovations. The original moon and sun-shaped pools have been replaced. Now, a single modern carp fish pond stands in their place. The original statue of Tian Hou is also missing. Hopefully it is not lost at sea.

Behind the pool, a newer sea wall blocks the view of the shipyard. Next to the pool, a small well is allegedly home to the spirit of a young boy who drowned.

Chiwan remains an important port on the Pearl River Delta. Close to the Dexuan Ancient Temple, you can visit other historically significant sites. These are the Left Fort and the tomb of the last emperor of the Southern Song Dynasty.

As you leave the Dexuan Ancient Temple, remember its significance. It represents a blend of history, faith, and maritime culture. The Dexuan Ancient Temple stands as a symbol of hope and protection. It watches over all who navigate the seas.
