The 89th Division bravely held its ground at Juyongguan. They suffered over 50% casualties in doing so.

The fighting involved heavy bombardment. Japanese forces used tanks and aircraft. They even used toxic gas against the Chinese troops. The Chinese 1st Cavalry Army fought bravely in Northern Chahar. They captured several towns from the puppet Mongolian army. However they were eventually outmatched by the Japanese forces superior weaponry and organization.

Despite the overwhelming odds the Chinese resistance was tenacious. Units such as the 89th Division fought with incredible bravery. Their struggle against overwhelming odds highlights the spirit of resistance shown by the Chinese. The memorial serves as a powerful reminder of this.

The Nankou Campaign ended with a Chinese retreat. The Japanese seized Kalgan. The subsequent establishment of a puppet South Chahar Government marked a dark chapter in the history of China.
