Seventy-three thousand seats. That’s the planned capacity of the Guangzhou Football Park. More commonly known as Riverside Stadium this impressive structure stands as a testament to ambition and resilience.
Originally envisioned as the Guangzhou Evergrande Football Stadium the project was far grander. A 100000-seat behemoth designed to resemble a blooming lotus flower. It was meant to be the largest football-specific stadium globally. Evergrande Group the real estate giant behind the project had ambitious dreams. Their football club Guangzhou Evergrande FC was riding high on a wave of success. A new stadium was a fitting symbol of their triumph.
However Evergrande’s financial woes halted construction. Debts exceeding 300 billion US dollars brought the project to a screeching halt. The original design proved too ambitious and controversial. Work slowed in mid-2021 completely stopping in mid-2022.
The city stepped in acquiring the unfinished stadium and the land. A new design competition was launched. The capacity was significantly reduced to 73000 seats. The new design now draws inspiration from ancient artifacts. The jade pendant with its dragon and phoenix design found in the Mausoleum of King Nanyue is a key influence. Guangzhou’s ivory carving tradition also informed the aesthetic.
The Guangzhou Football Park is more than a stadium. It will serve as a symbol of the entire Pearl River Delta Metropolitan Region. While the football club it will host Guangzhou FC is no longer a top-tier team. It still aspires to host major international events. The Asian Cup and even FIFA World Cup matches are a possibility.
The stadium will be a multi-functional complex. It will boast a fitness center and sports commercial areas. Its six floors include parking spaces changing rooms and function rooms. The design promises an efficient organic blend of venues. The ground floor will feature guest areas private boxes and commercial space. Underground floors will house parking and sports function rooms.
Construction restarted in March 2024. The end of 2025 is the target completion date. The Guangzhou Football Park a testament to resilience and a symbol of Guangzhou’s ambitions. It promises to be a landmark stadium in Asia. This remarkable venue. A true symbol of perseverance.
